“This was the first finding of young of year that anyone can recall since…March 2004,” Balazik says. It is used by biologists to determine the fish’s age. The Atlantic Sturgeon doesn’t breed until it is at least 12 years old. Photo by Ryan Haggerty/USFWS . A large female sturgeon can lay as many as two million eggs. Sturgeons are prehistoric fish that have existed for more than 120 million years. By 1989, a mere 400 pounds were reported in all of the United States, with few records of them returning to the Chesapeake Bay. Atlantic sturgeon, one of the oldest and largest fish on earth (growing upward of 14 feet long and weighing more than 800 pounds) were once found in huge numbers along the Atlantic Coast and coastal rivers from Canada to Florida. Human activities such as pollution, historic overfishing and damming of rivers threaten sturgeon. Atlantic sturgeon can live for more than 60 years. The largest Atlantic sturgeon ever recorded was caught in Canada. It grows slowly, eventually reaching 5 to 6 feet in length.
Pollution, and locks and dams across the large rivers it prefers, which block access to spawning grounds, have been responsible for the Lake Sturgeon’s decline. Sturgeons can live 50 to 100 years or more, depending on the species.
The Lake Sturgeon doesn’t spawn until it is about 15 years old. Sturgeon are anadromous, meaning they live in the ocean and spawn in freshwater rivers. Sturgeons are very sensitive to low oxygen, pollution and other poor water conditions. Fish and Wildlife Service Home Page | Department of the Interior The family is grouped into four genera: Acipenser, Huso, Scaphirhynchus and Pseudoscaphirhynchus. Extinct sturgeon relatives date back more than 350 million years.
Once hatched, juveniles stay in their natal river for as long as six years before moving into the Bay’s open waters and eventually the ocean. During spawning, the eggs are broadcast over a large area and left unattended to hatch in eight to ten days. It has no scales, but five rows of bony plates, called scutes, cover its head and body: one along the back, one on either side and two along the belly. Biologists say that Sturgeons are the most primitive of the bony fishes alive today. In Pennsylvania there are three Sturgeon species: The Shortnose Sturgeon (Acipenser brevirostrum), the Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) and the Atlantic Sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrhynchus). The Shortnose Sturgeon grows to about three feet. However, they are slow to mature sexually, and there may be several years between each spawning. Finding these super young, less than a year-old fish is significant because it indicates where the adults have been spawning.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The tiny dark-brown or blackish eggs extruded by the female are adhesive and stick to the bottom. The Atlantic Sturgeon is found occasionally in the Delaware River in Pennsylvania, where the adults migrate to spawn and then return to the ocean. Sturgeon is the common name for the 27 species of fish belonging to the family Acipenseridae. There were also landlocked populations of Atlantic sturgeon in Lake Ladoga and Onega in Russia. Besides overfishing, other factors were impacting the sturgeon’s survival — pollution, loss of spawning grounds due to heavy siltation, bycatch (fish caught in fishing gear targeting other commercial species) and ship-strikes. | FOIA, Atlantic Sturgeon Reproducing in the James River, Virginia. One tagged fish journeyed 900 miles in a single summer. Proudly founded in 1681 as a place of tolerance and freedom. PA League of Angling Youth A fish that could reach 15 feet in length and weigh up to 800 pounds would do severe damage to wooden boats if the unwary pilot happened to come upon one accidentally. PA Fishing Licenses FAQ's | Notices | Disclaimer The Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus) is a member of the family Acipenseridae and along with other sturgeon it is sometimes considered a living fossil. Atlantic Sturgeons are the state’s largest fish.
Atlantic Sturgeons are travelers. Males weigh up to 90 pounds and females weigh up to 160 pounds.
It is dark-brown or black on the back, lighter brown to yellow below. Opening Days and Seasons Photo by Ryan Haggerty/USFWS. It is found in Pennsylvania when it returns to the Delaware River to spawn. Past exploitation by commercial fishermen, pollution of tidal streams and estuaries used by spawning adults, and habitat loss have led to its reduced numbers.

You may be trying to access this site from a secured browser on the server. It has no scales, but five rows of bony plates, called scutes, cover its head and body: one along the back, one on either side and two along the belly. The Service’s Albert Spells (left) and Matt Balazik, with the Engineer Research and Development Center for the Army Corps of Engineers, collect sturgeon. Harvest peaked at 700,000 pounds in Chesapeake Bay waters alone in the late 1890s with a total of 7 million pounds in landings from all East Coast states. Lake Sturgeons reach seven feet long, with olive-brown to gray on the back and sides, white underparts, and dark-brown to gray fins.
Then in 2012, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries listed four populations of Atlantic sturgeon as endangered, one of which was the Chesapeake Bay. During the great “Caviar Rush” or “Black Gold Rush,” in the late 1800s, Atlantic sturgeon became a highly prized fishery. Atlantic sturgeon, one of the oldest and largest fish on earth (growing upward of 14 feet long and weighing more than 800 pounds) were once found in huge numbers along the Atlantic Coast and coastal rivers from Canada to Florida. Spawning occurs from April to June in the freshwater river they were born in, with sturgeon typically only returning to spawn every 3 to 5 years. The Atlantic sturgeon is a bony, ancient-looking fish that visits the Chesapeake Bay in spring to spawn in Virginia’s James and York rivers. Sturgeon adults spawn in spring on a stony bottom in the fast current of large rivers. Females can lay up to 2 million eggs, which are large and black and stick to the bottom of the river. Males do not reach sexual maturity until they are at least 10 years old, and females take nearly 20 years to mature. Photo by Matt Balazik, “We learned that there was a larger population of sturgeon using Virginia waters than previously realized, and we had evidence of successful spawning. Sturgeons were abundant when English settlers arrived in the Bay region in the 1600s. Atlantic sturgeon live in rivers and coastal waters from Canada to Florida. As bottom-feeders, they use their snout to root through the mud and find their prey, then suck it into their mouth like a vacuum. Atlantic sturgeon breaching in the James River. Biologist Reports The earliest sturgeon fossils date to the Late Cretaceous, and are descended from other, earlier acipenseriform fish who date back to the Triassic period some 245 to 208 million years ago. Sturgeons are found throughout the Northern Hemisphere, in both fresh water and salt water. Sturgeons supported an important fishing industry from colonial times to the early 20. Some adults overwinter in the tidal Delaware as well.
This is because they have five rows of bony plates running along the body, one along the back, two on the sides and two on the underside. The plates are sharp in young fish, but smooth with wear in older, larger fish. The large, bony scales along its sides are lighter than the body color, and the paired fins are outlined in white. It may take decades for them to rebuild their populations. Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus) were so abundant along the East Coast in the mid-1800s that boaters along the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania were warned about them. Historically overfished and susceptible to poor water quality, the species was declared endangered in 2012 and Horn Point is part of an effort to establish a broodstock population to rebuild its numbers.
The Lake Sturgeon is also a state-endangered species, found primarily in fresh water. But, winning is possible with great partners, a lot of volunteers and dedication to solving unknowns.
Sturgeons are found throughout the Northern Hemisphere, in both fresh water and salt water.
The upper body is gray or blue-black, and contrasts with the white spines on the body plates, the front edge of the paired fins, and the lower portion of the tail fin. In the marine species, the juvenile Sturgeon spend time in the brackish lower river and estuary, before heading for the ocean. “Our coast-wide tagging program helped us learn where sturgeon go, but we still weren’t finding evidence of spawning or young of year fish,” fish born in that year, says Spells. All of the Bay’s large rivers likely once had spawning populations of Atlantic sturgeon. Unfortunately, all of these populations are now extinct due to poaching and overfishing.
